Classroom Management with
Establish Encourage Respond

Establish · Encourage · Respond is a framework that organizes evidence-based classroom practices—strategies supported by research and shown to improve student engagement, behaviour, and learning—into a clear, usable sequence. In education, evidence-based does not mean rigid or scripted; it means practices are grounded in what has been studied and proven over time.

Teachers often receive well-intentioned advice, but the key question is whether it is evidence-based. Classroom management is too complex to rely on guesswork, tradition, or strategies that “worked once.” Teachers need approaches that are dependable, adaptable, and grounded in more than personal preference.

By organizing practices into a coherent framework, Establish · Encourage · Respond helps teachers understand not just what to do, but when and why to do it—making classroom management more intentional, effective, and sustainable. It also makes a complex topic more approachable.

The framework follows a logical sequence: establish first, then encourage, then respond. It is difficult to respond to behaviour if expectations are not clearly defined. This structure keeps the approach manageable and supports implementation, allowing teachers to build practices over time rather than all at once.

Establish · Encourage · Respond is not a single intervention, but a framework for selecting and organizing effective practices. Teaching is demanding, and while EER can improve effectiveness, it is designed to support teachers gradually—not overwhelm them.
